How does Magnetic therapy healing work on pain? Thanks?

I have a magnet that you place against your stomach when you have period pains- how does this work? Thanks

  1. It has merely got a placebo effect. This effect is of course very powerful, especially when it comes to affecting pain, with up to 70% of users obtaining benefit, showing how powerful that suggestion is.
  2. 'Permanent' magnets, i.e. those with no power supply are very weak and it's impossible for them to have any real affect on the body. Some devices say they are magnets, but are really electro-stimulants that confuse nerve signals in an area of pain temporarily when applied. Certainly all the permanent magnet 'healing' info on the web is rubbish, any effect is via placebo.
  3. That can't possibly work beyond placebo. Magnetic therapy is an alt med scam. No plausibility and zero evidence of efficacy. If little therapy magnets had an effect on your body, imagine what an MRI machine would do to you. They are many orders of magnitude stronger than therapy magnets. Being open minded, I am willing to change my answer if anyone can correct me. However corrections will not be accepted unless accompanied by robust, peer-reviewed, scientific data.
  4. There is no evidence to support this claim or indeed rational reason to expect magnetic therapy to help pain. http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/?p=18
  5. If it is all placebo effect, why do magnets work on animals and babies? I don't know why they work but I have seen them give relief where nothing else helped.
